On a recent trip to Glacier National Park from Missouri, we stayed in Rapid City, South Dakota. While we were there, we wanted to check out Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills. It was 6 years ago since we’ve been through here, and we wanted to take a day or two to explore it a little more. After we saw Mt. Rushmore, Tyler and I decide to head south and see Custer State Park and Hike a little.

Here is a list of our top 10 recommendations for this amazing part of the county and the Black Elk Peak Hike we did.

Black Elk Peak Hike is the perfect addition for any trip to Mount Rushmore! This beautiful hike is only 35 minutes from the faces within Custer State Park.

It is a 7.5 mile round trip hike that features easily the best view you can get of the Black Hills.

THE VIEW! On a clear day you can see 20 miles in every direction from the summit.

Along the way you'll see everything that the Black Hills has to offer; grass meadows, forests, unique rock formations, wildflowers, and even wildlife if you're lucky!

This is a strenuous trip, sometimes climbing through cracks in the mountains.
don't forget to pack water and a snack to enjoy while you take in the views. A pair of good hiking boots, walking stick and first aid kit wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

It costs 20$ per car to enter Custer State Park but it is well worth the fee, since there is so much to see and do here.
The park features a restaurant, gift shop, restaurant, and a lake to cool off in after your hike.
The Black Hills area is a great place to stop for a day on a road trip or even stay for a weekend. The area is truly breathtaking! Spearfish, Deadwood, and Rapid City have more than enough to do for as long as you like to stay. There are lots of outdoor opportunities. Fishing, hiking, kayaking, and the scenic drives are our favorite things to do

If you have time, you should check out the Needles Highway on 244. The tunnel is something that you shouldn’t miss!
